Some projects just feel extra close to home. Maybe because as a mom of two small boys, I understand the real needs behind them. These homeowners wanted what so many of us want: a kitchen that actually works for family life, plus a family room and a powder room right as you come in from the car.

We opened the wall between the kitchen and dining room and added a long counter with windows looking straight out to the backyard so they can keep an eye on the kids while cooking. We also carved out a much-needed mudroom and powder room because backpacks, cleats, and tiny muddy shoes happen, and we added a family room off the back of the house.

The steep slope in the yard made this one a fun challenge. Solving these puzzles is truly one of my favorite parts of this job.

This project wrapped up during the pandemic, but we still reference it all the time when we talk with clients about how to make these older Montclair and Glen Ridge homes work better for modern living.

These homeowners bought this adorable house with a vision. They dreamed of a larger, more functional kitchen and a family and dining space that flowed naturally off the back of the home. They wanted a place where they could cook, gather, and entertain the people they love.

We opened up the layout, expanded the kitchen, and created a bright, connected space that works beautifully for everyday life and for hosting. These homeowners were absolute troopers living through a renovation during peak pandemic chaos, and they selected all the finishes themselves. Everything came together so well. It is still one of my favorite transformations.

Homeowners often come to us asking to create a primary suite in the attic, a private retreat tucked away from the rest of the house.

These projects are some of my favorites. They come with the unique challenge of working within sloped ceilings and tight spaces, but that is also what makes them so fun to design.

We always model attics in 3D to see exactly where we can maximize full ceiling height and where we can cleverly tuck in storage or a tub under a roof slope.

Turning underused attics into cool, functional suites is one of the most satisfying transformations we do.

We added a two-story addition with a kitchen on the first floor and a new primary suite above.

This is a life changing improvement for this lovely family.

In this project the original kitchen was small, dark, and sandwiched between the attached garage and basement stair.
When we first started talking about ideas Diana from @vonhoffmannlandscapearchitect suggested adding an addition on the south side of the house and relocate the kitchen to the new addition so it connects to the best part of the property (the side/backyard).

This design allowed a nice big mudroom where the current kitchen used to be. Now the family can come in straight from the garage through the new mudroom.

We added a two-story addition with a kitchen on the first floor and a new primary suite above.

This is a life changing improvement for this lovely family.

The range, sink, and fridge all sit along the outside wall, leaving room for a clean, spacious island. We opened the kitchen into the dining room and then into the former screen porch, adding a cozy breakfast nook that makes the whole space feel light and connected. Now the kitchen is truly the heart of the home, with openings that let the family stay connected to the front living room

What’s the Deal with Egress Windows?

When we design remodels or additions to older homes, a few building codes come up again and again: smoke detectors, tempered glass, stair railings, and egress windows.

So what is an egress window?

It is a window large enough for someone to escape through in an emergency and for a firefighter to enter if needed.

Here is what the code requires for new bedroom windows:

✔️ Minimum opening size: 5.7 square feet
✔️ Maximum height off the floor: 44 inches
✔️ Required in every bedroom, especially in basements

Many bedrooms in older homes do not have egress windows, but that only becomes an issue if you are adding or modifying a bedroom.

This is not just about checking a box for code compliance. It is about making sure people can exit safely during an emergency and allowing first responders to get in when it matters most.

What’s the Deal with Egress Windows?

When we design remodels or additions to older homes, a few building codes come up again and again: smoke detectors, tempered glass, stair railings, and egress windows.

So what is an egress window?

It is a window large enough for someone to escape through in an emergency and for a firefighter to enter if needed.

Here is what the code requires for new bedroom windows:

✔️ Minimum opening size: 5.7 square feet
✔️ Maximum height off the floor: 44 inches
✔️ Required in every bedroom, especially in basements

Many bedrooms in older homes do not have egress windows, but that only becomes an issue if you are adding or modifying a bedroom.

This is not just about checking a box for code compliance. It is about making sure people can exit safely during an emergency and allowing first responders to get in when it matters most.

A Kitchen Transformation

This family loved their beautiful home but struggled with a small, awkward kitchen. There was a back staircase leading to the old maid’s quarters and a pantry blocked the kitchen from connecting to the backyard and side patio.

We removed the back staircase and walls to create a clean slate for a spacious, balanced kitchen design. The new layout features a large island perfect for gathering with friends and family. Now the homeowners can enjoy a seamless connection to their patio and backyard—and even have a great view of the backyard while washing dishes!

A few years ago, I was hesitant to invest too much time in creating 3D views. However, as technology has evolved, it has become much easier to provide our clients with a glimpse of what’s possible for their homes. It’s incredible to see how these tools help bring their visions to life.

New inset cabinetry installed awaiting countertops. This custom paint color in a warm but subtle tone compliments all the natural light and outside greenery through these reclaimed metal divided lite windows.

New inset cabinetry installed awaiting countertops. This custom paint color in a warm but subtle tone compliments all the natural light and outside greenery through these reclaimed metal divided lite windows.

These homeowners purchased this adorable home with the dream of remodeling the kitchen to be larger and adding a family / Dining space off the back of the house.

The idea was to create a fabulous space for entertaining their friends and family. They were troopers living through a remodel in the peak of the pandemic chaos.

The homeowers did a beautiful job selecting all the finishes themselves. I love how this one turned out.

In this project the original kitchen was small, dark, and sandwiched between the attached garage and basement stair.
When we first started talking about ideas Diana from @vonhoffmannlandscapearchitect suggested adding an addition on the south side of the house and relocate the kitchen to the new addition so it connects to the best part of the property (the side/backyard).

This design allowed a nice big mudroom where the current kitchen used to be. Now the family can come in straight from the garage through the new mudroom.

We added a two-story addition with a kitchen on the first floor and a new primary suite above.

This is a life changing improvement for this lovely family.

My clients did an amazing job with the interior finish selections on this project.
